Centro Plantronics Voyager 855 Stereo Bluetooth Headset

The new Plantronics Voyager 855 headset offers a convertible design and immersive sound experience for calls as well as listening to music on Bluetooth enabled mobile phones with stereo A2DP. The lightest stereo headset available to date, the new Voyager 855 includes intelligent features that offer unparalleled audio clarity.

Tailored Wear for Mono or Stereo Sound

Customizable for either mono or stereo use, the Plantronics Voyager 855 features a detachable stereo cable so consumers can tailor the wearing style to their communication and entertainment preferences. With specially designed, form-fitting earbuds, the Voyager 855 fits snugly and securely to seal out unwanted background distractions.

The Voyager 855's sound-isolating earbuds and convertible cable offer crystal clear wireless stereo sound when listening to digital music, as well as complete binaural immersion in conversations. When attached, the stereo cable also enables wireless AVRCP remote control capabilities. Plantronics' stereo multipoint technology alerts users to incoming calls and allows easy switching between conversations and music.

Drop the second earbud or detach the cable and the headset serves as a high-quality mono Bluetooth device.

Slide-to-Talk, Boom-Extended Microphone

The Plantronics Voyager 855 Bluetooth headset features a sleek slide-to-talk boom to provide convenient call control and improved audio performance. Sliding the boom open instantly connects the caller. The extending boom also houses a voice tube to position the microphone closer to the mouth for directional voice reception, ensuring maximum voice clarity and intelligibility. When the boom slides back, the call ends and/or the user's music selection conveniently resumes play.

Plantronics AudioIQ® - Noise Reduction and Two-Way Call Clarity

The Voyager 855 features Plantronics' award-winning AudioIQ technology - an exclusive, adaptive digital signal processing (DSP) technology that automatically reduces background noise and intelligently adjusts audio levels to increase clarity on both ends of a conversation.

Plantronics' new Voyager 855 offers approximately seven hours talk time, six hours listening time and 160 hours stand-by time from a single battery charge. And at only 15 grams - the Voyager 855 is the lightest stereo Bluetooth headset available.

Note: Stereo Bluetooth capability only works with phones that support Bluetooth A2DP.

TreoCentral Review
TC Review: Plantronics Voyager 855 Bluetooth Headset
Reviewed by Andre Kibbe
The Voyager is very easy on the eyes, with its black casing and silver trim that color coordinates fabulously with the black Centro. Like the Centro, the black casing is slick and picks up fingerprints all too easily, unlike the matte black I’d prefer. The big silver button on the face is the call control button for answering and ending calls, and for powering the headset on and off. The top edge features a tiny mute button and a volume rocker.

Plantronics has accounted for all users’ unique wearing preferences by including three sets of noise isolating eargels in different sizes. As usual, I preferred the smallest set, and still had traction problems. I’ve always had bad luck keeping earbuds of any type (expect Sony’s) in my ear for more than a few minutes, and psychologically don’t trust them. Fortunately, the package includes a pair of earhooks, which can be mounted from either direction for wear on either ear. I prefer the Voyager’s earhook receptacle design, a simple molded slot open on both ends, to an integrated hook on a hinge—a potential point of failure. The slot is lined on the inside with terminals for carrying the signal to the stereo cable. For those comfortable with eargels, the headset is designed for use without the earhook.

The headset is very lightweight and well balanced. During the few minutes I managed to keep the Voyager in my ear without the hook, the unit did seem to vanish from my awareness, and took less getting used to than most headsets in terms of fit and heft. The weight is 11 grams for single-piece use, 15 grams with the stereo cable.

The Voyager features a nifty slide-to-talk boom-extended microphone, which slides out about an inch to accept calls, and slides back into the body to end calls. A tiny notch on either side of the boom is used to grip when sliding. Initially, at least, there’s enough friction between the boom and the headset body that the headset tends to come off the ear (especially without the earhook) when extending the boom, unless you brace the unit at the back with your index finger. Once the unit is broken in over time, bracing the headset probably won’t be necessary.

The pairing process couldn’t be simpler. Upon powering the unit for the first time, the Voyager defaults to pairing mode, and stays there for 10 minutes. There’s no button to hold down while running through the Treo’s Hands-Free Setup procedure. Pairing took less than a minute, using the usual passkey of four zeroes.

Making calls is an equally familiar process. Calls are dialed from the handset and automatically transferred to the headset. There are two optional methods for answering and ending calls: sliding the boom microphone out and in respectively, or pressing the call control button.

Almost feature perfect. Almost...

Pros: No tangled wires
Cons: Weak bass, earclip not bendable
I purchased one 855 and lost it and still bought another, so believe me when I tell you I like it. It does what it says, it provides either mono or stereo sound so that you can listen to your music and then quickly switch to a phone call and back again. The controls are good and the wire on the stereo earpiece is nice and sturdy. The extendable boom for the microphone works fine, though no one said I used it with said I sounded better with it extended versus retracted. Its a nice, uncluttered design.

So where are my issues? Well, it could be louder, but then again, all BT headsets could be louder. On the other hand, the bass on the 855 is definitely weak. Good for casual music, great for podcasts, but not for the serious music maven. Also, the earclip that supports the 855 is not bendable to mold to your own shape for better support. I would very much like to see the earclip on the Plantronics 520 applied to this unit. Also, the actually earpiece on the headset was less snug than the stereo piece because it is molded at an angle. This allows sounds in from the outside occasionally. Since I specifically wanted an in-the-ear solution to minimize external sounds, this is an occasional disappointment. This would probably be less of an issue with more support from a better earclip.

But from an overall functionality element, I really like the 855. Its a solid choice with some acceptable compromises.
good invention

Pros: can use to talk with no wires attached
Cons: short wire attached to each piece
I can use this invention to listen to radio and talk to brother within 20 seconds of attach wire from end to other end. This is wonderful wireless product to talk on mobile phone to phone outside not in house. I do recommend to you to buy. I am proud owner of first generation TREO and internet user.
