TC Review: Monaco Flip Case for Treo 750, 680
Reviewed by Jay Gross
Monaco’s leather flip case for the Treo 750 and 680 does what every case should – protect the Treo – and it does it beautifully. This excellently made case comes in three colors, none of them black. How’s that for a new thrill? And how’s that for fashion, too.

The hand made (so says the package) leather case is of the flip persuasion. The Treo fits into a snug pouch, which sports a cutout for the keyboard, and the case closes vertically, latching at the bottom via a narrow, leather tab with a magnetic snap. The snap appears to be plentifully strong to do the job.

The case protects against raindrops (ack!) with its padded, reinforced leather panels that stick out far enough from the Treo’s contours to also keep bumps and knocks away. When closed, its stiffened flap keeps most anything away from the touch screen, yet affords instant access when needed, such as looking up a number, making or taking a call, or running a quick check on the weather forecast over the Internet.

StarStarStarStarStar Great Looking and Functional

Pros:  Great Treo protection; Comes in colors other than black
Cons:  Bottom snap strap location

I'm a Realtor and my Treo 680 is my lifeline and GE Supra infrared lockbox key. I like the easy flip access for answering calls and exposing the infrared without taking the Treo out of the case. It's affordable, great-looking, and I chose red so that it looks a little more feminine. My Treo fits snug enough to stay put but it's easy to remove in case of a soft reset. Haven't had any problems with the case being too snug as to accidentally turn on the phone while bouncing around in my purse/briefcase.

Wish that the bottom snap strap would be located on the top cover instead of the bottom because it gets in the way while using the phone. However, I use a bluetooth headset most of the time, so no big deal. I also found that I can flip the lid backwards and snap the bottom strap out of the way. The strap isn’t too stiff either so I guess I’m just looking for something to complain about.

I looked at many flip style cases and this is the best one that had the most protection with quick and easy access to the infrared. Other cases might be fancier but the price was right and it looks great!
StarStarStarStarStar Overall good flip case

Pros:  Nice leather, great fit, keyboard is never accidentally touched
Cons:  Clip wore out

The leather is really nice on this case, good fit, all the bottom ports are available. You can tuck the flap behind but its a little more bulky then I like. The keyboard is never accidentally turned on. The most disappointing aspect of this case is the clip wore out in about a year and would fall off of me. I only use the clip to exercise and the rest of the time it is in my purse. I work out about 5 days a week so its not like the clip was overused. I could see that the part that screws into the case actually warped with use.
Since then I ordered a different non flap case and my phone is constantly being turned on and starting different applications.
Because of this I have actually ordered a second one just to replace the round part of plastic that the clip attaches to as I really do like the case but need a working belt clip. Other then that my only opinion would be it would be nice if when you flip the cover back it would snap somehow into the back for a flatter silhouette.
StarStarStarStarStar Nice case with minor flaws

Pros:  Great fit, nice leather
Cons:  Poor quality clip, irritating closure flap

My last phone was a Treo 650. I used a Covertec luxury flap case with that phone and absolutely loved it. However, for my Treo 755p, I chose the Monaco case because user reviews on this site for the Covertec case were not flattering--the fit seems to be poor.

I received my Monaco case today. The fit is perfect. Its snug, but its also easy to get the phone in and out of the case. The leather is nice. As the review stated, theres no cut out for the MiniSD card slot, but thats not a big issue for me--I dont tend to change cards often. The case folds down in the rear to expose the camera, and it has holes drilled through the back for the speaker. Nice touch--another thing that the Covertec case HAD for the 650 but does NOT for the 755p. The cutouts for the cables on the bottom are spot on. Its slim and very nice in the hand.

Now for the bad stuff. First, the belt clip is a joke. In fact, mine was broken right out of the box. Theres a knob that screws into the back of the case and the clip looks similar to standard spring-loaded belt clips you find on other devices. Since the knob was a screw-in, I tried the Covertec knob on the Monaco and found that the Covertec system actually can work with this case...but I have chosen to leave the clip off. I think Ive used the belt clip twice in the last year. However, this is a consideration if you do want the Treo on your belt. Oh--and the Covertec WIPS system...well the clip is even worse than this one.

My last issue is with the magnetic closure flap. I like the Covertec closure system--especially with the ability to push the flap into a slot in the back of the case. It takes the flap out of the way when youre making a call. The Covertec magnetic closure is also one of my favorite things about the Covertec case--the magnets are so strong that if you place the closure near the magnetic snap, it instantly snaps close. With the Monaco, you need to physically line up the snap and the button...and then push it close. It does keep the case secure after youve closed it and this is a somewhat minor thing, but I think Covertec uses slightly better materials for their cases. And it shows.

I thought about returning the Monaco and getting the Covertec. Two things have prevented me from doing this. First, TreoCentral doesnt carry the Covertec case in Red (even though Covertec DOES offer it in red despite what the review says). Second, Monaco really does fit the 755p like a glove. It wont slide out. The cut outs are spot-on. Great fit, good quality in general...okay. And a price tag of $10 below the Covertec is a clincher.
