TreoCentral Review
TC Review: Jabra BT8040
Reviewed by Neal Martin
The BT8040 is a small headset to be sure, which I particularly like! It’s black with a rubbery feel to it, but not too tacky, and the black is complimented by a silver band which runs around the perimeter from top to bottom and across the front of the headset along the volume control area. I have it pictured below next to a AAA battery so you can gauge just how small it is. I haven’t weighed my BT8040, but the manufacturer, Jabra, says it weighs in at around 10 grams, which is roughly .35 ounces - very lightweight.

The headset can be paired with 2 phones simultaneously, but can be paired with a total of 8 devices – a nice feature, as you can answer either phone with one headset – very handy if you actually do have 2 phones. Notable, though, is that the voice-dialing will only work with whichever phone was last paired with the BT8040.

The BT8040 is a very capable A2DP device! While my Centro doesn’t support A2DP, I paired the BT804 with my Treo 750 and, after a little trial and error, streamed music to my headset. I also discovered a 5th LED light possibility – a purple light, which means the headset is in a special, music pairing mode. The music isn’t, of course, up to par with, say, an mp3 player designed for optimal audio – but, hey, I bought the bluetooth headset for the expressed purpose of freeing up my hands while driving and talking on my Centro.

I listened to music while I wrote this review, in fact. I also listened to it while I did other tasks around the house – and, the headsets charge lasted quite a few hours! I’m not a big enough fan of listening to music with headphones to test the actual life expectancy of a charge for the headset, but do believe it would be sufficient for most folks hehe

I can’t really think of anything bad to say about this headset, other than the fact that even the small ear gel seems too big for my tiny ear canals. But, that’s because of my ears and most people would surely find a more comfortable fit amongst the 3 sizes of ear gels included in the package.

I’ve used my Jabra BT8040 for about a month now and can tell you I’m very happy and think that the price of $79.95 is a fair one considering all the features. I would highly recommend it to you or anyone! Its multi-function capability, small size, and precise sound make it the perfect device for hands-free cell phone use while driving or simply lounging and listening to music from your A2DP capable devices.

Best so far
User: twitch 3, Dec 27, 2007
Pros: Stays connected, very comfortable.
Cons: Small amounts of static sometimes, could be a little louder
This is my favorite so far. Retired units: Moto H700, Jabra JX10, Palm Headset(The first one) SE HBH 610, Blueant Z9, Jawbone

This one stays connected better than any I have owned. Very comfortable to wear for long periods. The A2DP is really nice for long, boring engagements. No can tell you are listening to something else. I wish all BT manufacturers would learn from Spinal Tap and let the volume control go to 11.
Excellent for music and voice
User: jeff fonseca, Dec 28, 2007
I am going from a Samsung WEP200 to this and for the last few days, I am very pleased. The BT8040 is louder than the wep200, which was one of my biggest complaints cause in the car, I could not hear the other side unless I pressed the WEP200 into my ear. The BT8040 does not have this issue and it is more comfortable to war to boot.

I use SAG to stream music and have the Petitelaunch program to toggle the BT stream on and off when I use Kinoma or Ptunes. After the music session, it takes a short time for the headset to repair and a couple of times I had to switch BT on and off on the Treo700P I have (post MR). As the other reviewer said, this is an excellent combo headset, small lightweight so I just toss it in my pocket.

My wife and best friend also both said it sounds better than the WEP200, louder and clearer, but still a slight echo/distance sound. This is while I use it in the car driving for comparison.
Best Bluetooth of all Ive owned so far
User: David Lerell, Jan 4, 2008
Pros: small, stays in ear, great for listening to music and tv
Cons: None
I have owned the Plantronics 655 and the motorola S9, and the Samsung SBH170(what a waste of money with the Samsung SBH170).
The Jabra BT8040 Bluetooth Headset stays in my ear, is low profile, i can listen to music without them cutting out. Just a nice headset. Im happy with them and i think you will be too.
Best BT headset yet!!
User: Barry Meeks, Sep 5, 2008
Pros: easy pairing, great sound - both ways,
Cons: none so far
I have had at least two dozen different BT headsets and this is by far the most trouble free and most comfortable one yet! The fact that it supports streaming audio is the cherry on top. Weight is good, and micro usb matches the charger on my phone too.
Returned because of delayed connections
User: Saul Kaplan, Oct 6, 2008
Pros: volume, comfort, size, weight, USB charging
Cons: sometimes poor connection time, lack of earhook
Generally a pretty good product. A friend who works for a major wireless company asked the Palm salesman for his opinion, and this was one he mentioned.

I had to finally return it, because about 30 of the time, the headset would not connect to the phone after the dialing sequence was finished. The Treo screen would say Active and the icon would show a bluetooth connection, but you could tell from the sounds in your ear (or lack of) that you were not connected.
