The internal lithium ion battery powers the GPS for at least 8 hours of continuous use, saving your PDA or Laptop's battery.

The SiRFstarIII is a high performance and low power consumption chip set. Its superior sensitivity has the ability to trace signals from 20 geo-synchronous satellites simultaneously while updating information from the satellites once every second. These improvements in reception capacity enable the user to enjoy clear reception in environments with typically poor signal reception, making the mini-S3 ideal for navigating in urban canyons, in the mountains, or under dense foliage.

TC Review: EMTAC Navigator V4 PalmOS Bundle

First, charge up and turn on the GPS receiver, so it "warms up" and starts looking for the birds. With the incredibly fast satellite acquisition rates of the SiRF Star III chipset, a couple minutes (depending on your view of the sky, and other factors).. should be more than adequate to have that little green LED on the GPS flashing and telling the Treo where I am.

This tiny receiver has a nice rubberized feel to it and is about a third smaller than the earlier S3-BTGPS that was in the 3.0 bundle. The rubbery feel is comfy in my hands and doesn�t slip around easily, but it also slides into my pocket without getting hung up everywhere, so it�s a thoughtful balance of sticky/slippery. The mini-S3 also has a removable eight hour lithium ion battery which I suppose people who hike or geocache would be into.

One of the updates to the new EMTAC Navigator software is that it ships with 2007 NAVTEQ map data on its tiny storage card. Other changes I've noticed include the increased speed of the software when entering data or zooming in and out, which is much more fluid.

The address book linking still has the hit or miss feel of version 3.0, either it finds it and routes you to it, or it doesn�t. I think if the software does not find it as I have it listed in my contact book, then it should let one enter part of an address and edit it so you can route to it. Of course I can find the address on its own by using the address or zip feature�but if it is described and hyped as a feature, let me use it 100% of the time.

Like its predecessor, and unlike both TeleNav and Mapopolis, EMTAC V4 does NOT speak ANY street names at all.. either robotically, or with a human voice. It has a couple dozen female voice prompts to tell you when you're approaching a turn, if you're over the speed limit, destination ahead on your right, make a U-turn, and so on. I think this is an inferior approach as it means you have to look at the screen MUCH more often to see where you are and when you'll have to make a turn than if the program just TOLD you "In one quarter mile, turn left onto Rhode Island School of Design Terrace." (Yes, that's a real street name)..

For those looking for a reliable and quick GPS solution for your Treo and want the whole USA, pre-loaded, and available without monthly fees, EMTAC Navigator 4.0 is a viable option.

The software is just as pretty as before and should route you just fine to wherever you need to go. It uses the latest 2007 NAVTEQ map data. The address book / contact list route-to linking still has some hiccups, but is FAR better than previous versions. The SiRF Star III powered EMTAC mini-S3 GPS receiver is as remarkable as its predecessor, and the rubberized feel is pleasing both to the eye and the touch.

EMTAC Navigator 4.0 is one of a few GPS options available for PalmOS Treo owners, and worth consideration. The lack of an AC charger with a product at this price point is, in my opinion, inexcusable, although you do get the car DC charger in the bundle.

I prefer programs like TeleNav that can speak every street name, not just a limited number of promptings. But overall this bundle's re-engineered, feature-packed, and very attractive software is quicker and less quirky than the one I reviewed last year.
