TreoCentral Expert Review

TC Review: BlueAnt V1 Bluetooth Headset
Reviewed by Justin DeJarnette
I can now say that with a high degree of certainty after having some time to play with their V1 Bluetooth headset, which they advertise as the “World’s First Voice Controlled Headset.” I’m surprised no one else had already thought of this, with there being about 17,000 headsets on the market right now. It just makes sense.

Once you get into the package, you’ll find way more accessories than you would think could fit in there. There are three extra earpieces, an extra ear loop thing, a USB cable, a mini-USB adapter, a car charger, a USB-to-AC adapter, a quick-start guide and a full user manual. The unit uses a proprietary connector on the headset itself, but BlueAnt wisely provides you with every type of solution you can think of to get it charged when, where, and how you need to.

The headset itself is very small for all the features it provides. For some reason, I looked at picture in the TreoCentral store and thought the V1 would be a lot bigger than it is. But as far as Bluetooth headsets go, this one is definitely on the smaller side.

The V1 provides excellent sound quality. The speaker is plenty loud, and has a soft, muted quality that comes across as very easy to listen to. There is never the scratchy, high pitched, treble-filled sound that I have experienced with other similar devices. The sound is very nice to the ear and adds to the overall comfort of using the device.

BlueAnt has also implemented some type of dual microphone setup to capture and transmit your voice. I’m not sure how that works, but everbody I talked to heard me loudly and clearly. The headset also utilizes what BlueAnt refers to as Voice Isolation Technology, which is designed to give you a “more intelligible voice in a wide variety of noisy environments.” I tested the Voice Isolation Technology while in the car with the radio on and walking down the street on a windy day, and it definitely makes a difference. It’s not a huge difference, but the person on the other end could hear a little better when I had it turned on.

Now, everything I’ve mentioned so far is pretty standard for every Bluetooth headset out there. And as a “regular” Bluetooth headset, the V1 performs very well. But what sets this particular headset apart is the BlueGenie voice user interface, which controls most functions of the V1. The BlueGenie interface is as effective as it is thorough, making it possible to make, answer, and ignore calls all with your voice, without needing to access your phone.

It all starts when you power up the device for the first time, and the BlueGenie welcomes you to the V1 and offers to walk you through the pairing procedure, step by step. Very, very cool. The BlueGenie will alert you when it has paired successfully with the device, and will let you know when you have successfully connected to your phone every time you power it on after having established the initial pairing. From there, you press the BlueAnt button to start voice control, and the BlueGenie will prompt you to “say a command.” Say, “what can I say?” and the BlueGenie will list all of the commands the V1 will recognize. Say “teach me” and the BlueGenie will present you with three categories of tutorials the V1 offers (one that which lets you attempt each command to help you get used to how to say the commands; a tutorial on how to set up speed dial; and one that gives you a bunch of tips and tricks to use the voice activation more effectively) to help you get better with using the headset.

The Sense also comes fitted with a vibration sensor that detects when you get back in the car and automatically reconnects to your phone to ensure that you are always hands-free on the go.

Once installed and connected, the Sense will announce the names of incoming callers so theres no need to take your eyes off the road to know who is calling. Simply say the word "Answer" or "Ignore" to respond.

With voice dialing over Bluetooth, one tap of the Sense will allow you to make calls using your voice.

The Sense provides best-in-class sound with rich audio quality. The Senses high performance speaker and integrated digital signal processing technology deliver clear calls with loud, booming audio even in difficult conditions.

The Sense also features built-in A2DP functionality so you can hear podcasts, streaming music or GPS turn-by-turn directions from applications on your phone played back through your BlueAnt device.

Pros:  Excellent Product
Cons:  None

I just purchased the BlueAnt V1 for my Sprint Treo 755p and it works extremely well. The V1 will answer the 755p by voice command and I do hear the voice caller ID just fine.

I primarily bought this because driving a 1979 VW Bus 4-speed leaves me without a free hand to use my cell.

The Bus is very noisy inside and no one has any problem hearing me at all. The noise cancelling works very well.

The V1 is almost weightless, well fitting and comfortable. You forget you have it stuck in your ear. It paired right up and I have had no issues at all. It does sometimes screw up on the voice commands if I mumble a bit but if I speak clearly the Voice Commands all work correctly.

I really like the "Tie Clip" and it does stay on my shirt as I walk around the office all day.

The only major compliant is with the Treo. As with other posters here, I can only do a Blue Tooth Voice dial for Voicemail. I do not understand why that should work and the 2-9 Speed Dial positions do not.

Reports say the Treo 755p does not work at all with BT dialing but it sure does with Voice Mail (1). On the 755p, the voice mail Speed Dial is hard coded and cannot be changed. I figured I could at least change Speed Dial 1 for my home or office.

BTW, if you want to try to enter a number instead of a letter in the Speed Dial Quick Key, simply press the MENU KEY on the 755p (The Menu Key is located in the bottom right hand corner of the 755p keyboard).

You will get a Menu and choose Keyboard. You can then enter any single digit number into the Quick Key field.

I know the V1 works with the IPHONE and it also should work with the Palm Pre if it ever gets released. Nothing like announcing the worlds greatest phone while you have many thousands of old Treos still to be sold. Sprint must have had Osbourne Disease when they did this.

If anyone figures a way to get Speed Dial 2-9 working, please email me at marcftl@virzio.com
